In South African schools, the learners are largely responsible for the upkeep of the school grounds. These tasks are almost always tackled in a group manner.
Abel Moidi is a stern but effective principal. Under his leadership, Lot Mashiane Secondary School passing rate for grade 12 learners improved less than half to nearly 100%. One of his favorite techniques was simply to lock out late-comers, forcing an awkward line of questioning when they returned home just as school was starting.
The learners in the foreground barely made it in the nick of time. The learners in the background were not so lucky.
