Though municipal water was installed shortly before my arrival to Letlhakaneng in 2011, this system quickly broke down. This malfunctioning led to chronic water shortages in Letlhakaneng, which demanded the delivery of water by truck.

Though farming in Letlhakaneng was barely feasible due to poor soil and the inaccessibility of water, some of the finest agricultural land in the entirety of southern Africa lay not 20 miles away in the riparian valleys surrounding Brits.
Some children take advantage of a construction site – construction of a tar road from the main road began not long after I moved in – to use as playground.
